Why skim coating walls and ceilings?
Skim coating is a technique used to achieve smooth, blemish-free surfaces on interior walls and ceilings. The process involves applying a thin layer of joint compound or ready mixed filler over the entire surface to fill in any imperfections such as cracks, holes, or textured areas.
Skim coating requires a certain level of skill and finesse, as well as specific tools like taping knives and trowels, to apply the compound evenly and achieve a seamless finish.
Proper surface preparation is crucial before beginning a skim coating project. Any loose debris or high spots must be removed, and the surface should be thoroughly cleaned and primed to ensure the compound adheres correctly. The compound is applied in a thin, even coat using a trowel or drywall knife. Once the first coat dries, it is sanded down and recoated as necessary to achieve a perfectly uniform surface.
While skim coating requires patience and attention to detail, it yields impressive results, effectively creating a pristine, glass-like surface that paint can be applied to directly. More and more homeowners and contractors are turning to skim coating as an alternative to hanging new drywall when dealing with damaged or outdated walls. Though it requires a bit more time and effort upfront, skim coating can save money in the long run and result in an exceedingly smooth, high-end look.
