Preparing surfaces is a critical step before beginning any painting project to ensure proper paint adhesion and a smooth, professional finish.
The process starts with thoroughly cleaning the surface of any dirt, grime, grease or other contaminants. Any loose, flaking or peeling paint should be scraped and sanded away, and rough spots should be smoothed. Holes, cracks and other surface imperfections must be properly patched, repaired and sanded flush.
If painting over glossy surfaces, the sheen will need to be dulled by sanding or de-glossing to enable the new paint to bond well.
Finally, laying down dust sheets and carefully masking off adjacent surfaces with painter’s tape will protect those areas from drips, splatters or overspray. Taking the time to properly prepare the surface through these key steps will lay the foundation for achieving professional-looking, durable paint results.
